An Aquinian Sequence

  • A major organ cycle based on the liturgical texts of Thomas Aquinas. With poetic translations of the texts by Edward Joyner, this 45 minute meditation is designed as a sequence of preludes on the plainchant of the Aquinas texts. Each movement is also performable individually. Listen here.

When Music Sounds

  • Commissioned by Vocalis chamber choir and their conductor Alexander Kyle for the choir's 50th anniversary celebrations in 2024. This six-part, a cappella setting of Walter de la Mare's poem features various wordless sections, imagined as the internal soundtrack of the author.

Industria, Fide, Pietate

  • Commissioned by Harrogate Ladies' College to celebrate the college's 130th anniversary, this setting of the school motto utilises additional texts from 2 Peter. This four-part anthem with organ accompaniment is written for SSAA choir, with rousing tunes and aleatoric writing. Listen to the Choir of Harrogate Ladies' College performing the piece here.

The Gate of Heaven

  • Written for the choir of St Wilfrid, Harrogate, this large-scale anthem employs texts from Psalm 135, St Thomas Ken, Genesis 17 and Salman Rushdie. Suitable for the dedication festival of a church, the piece celebrates a place of worship as 'The Gate of Heaven'. Listen to the premiere performance here (with score video).

In the Sound of Song

  • Winner of the Harold Smart Memorial Composition Competition 2023, this anthem for SAMen was published by the RSCM for Music Sunday 2023. Listen to a performance from Bradford Cathedral Choir here.

Prelude on ‘Servant Song’

  • Written for organist Graham Thorpe, this prelude on the hymn tune 'Servant Song' takes inspiration from Francis Jackson's prelude on his own hymn tune 'East Acklam', and was written shortly after Francis Jackson's death in 2022. Listen to a performance by Anthony Gritten here.

    Hodie Christus Natus Est (2020) - 4’ Cantor, SATB divisi and organ

    A contemporary arrangement of the plainsong designed to be sung in place of ‘Yea Lord We Greet Thee’ at Midnight Mass or Christmas Day in times of pandemic.

    First performed on 24th December 2020 by the Choir of St Wilfrid, Harrogate with Jonathan Finch (cantor), Anthony Gray (organ) conducted by Richard Mantle.

    How Can I Keep from Singing? (2023) - 3’ SATB divisi and piano

    A melodic and simple setting of a text composed by member of the Derventio choir, for their 50th anniversary celebrations. The piece was selected as the winner of their composition competition.

    An arrangement of the carol designed for use with congregation where verses are designated to lower voices, higher voices and choir only.

    Te Lucis Ante Terminum (after Thomas Tallis) (2022) - 2’ SATB

    A setting of the Office Hymn for Compline paying homage to the fauxbourdon style in the setting of the same name by Thomas Tallis.

    Commissioned by Caius Lee and the Florence International Singing Programme.

    First performed by participants in the Florence International Singing Programme at St Mark’s English Church, 2022.
